The Governator n' Friends: UC Regents, 2007

Over a quarter–million students, just under 200,000 staff, and a budget of $41.6 billion: that's the jurisdiction of the 26 voting members of the Regents of the University of California. Join our committee to see how you would make decisions that determine the cost of attendance, admissions, employee compensation, and even land management up and down the state of California, all while navigating issues ranging from corruption scandals to the 2008 financial crisis. Our committee takes place just before that crisis. In 2007, the Regents signed a $50 million contract with BP to "promote, coordinate and fund research in the newly created field of energy biosciences." However, after that signing, outcry stemmed from several sides regarding both BP abusing its new power on campuses and the conflict of interest BP had. Given these developments, the Regents are once again convening to discuss a way forward.

STEPHEN SAW

Chair

Welcome, esteemed Regents!

My name is Stephen Saw, and I am honored to serve as your Chair for the Regents of the University of California system at UCBMUN XXVII! On the surface, the UC system is rather innocuous, merely serving as one of California's largest employers as well as the nation's most prestigious public university system. Through our research, we discovered that this prestigious institution is also mired in controversy: questionable contracts with oil companies, misappropriation of public funds on lavish dinner parties, university police departments' numerous abuse allegations have brewed a storm of controversy surrounding the regents' governance of the system.

About me: I am a junior studying Political Science with a minor in Global Studies from SoCal. In addition to serving as your chair for this committee, I am also the Generalized Head Delegate for UCBMUN. Outside of school, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and ranting to Sabrina about various topics. I look forward to seeing how you all will steer the Regents of the University of California in committee!

Best,
STEPHEN SAW

SABRINA BAUR

Crisis Director

Welcome honorable members of the Board of Regents!

My name is Sabrina Baur, and I am delighted to be your Crisis Director for the Regents of the University of California! While none of us were in college when the events of this committee took place, one can still feel its ripples today, especially if you are a student of the University of California system. In this committee, you will get to see the machinery that makes one of the biggest tertiary institution systems in the world run, as well as when these regents use their funds for less than academic reasons.

A little about myself! I am a junior studying Cognitive Science with a minor in design, and I am originally from Zurich, Switzerland. Along with being your CD, I am UCBMUN's Director of Travel. Outside of school, I love trying new foods, obscure language facts, and ranting to Stephen about various topics. I look forward to seeing your plans for our committee, especially how you will all adapt to whatever the ACDs and I will throw your way. Wear some blue and gold, and Fiat Lux!

Yours Truly,
SABRINA BAUR
