Welcome to the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee: Tackling the Digital Era. This committee takes place in the present day, and is meant to address the ways in which the digital world is impacting our political, social, and personal lives. Delegates are expected to use dynamic and collaborative solutions to tackle a plethora of issues, such as dis/misinformation, the growth of domestic extremism, the transitioning role of journalism, privacy concerns, international interference in elections, and more. The key tenant of the digital age is the amount of power it grants the individual, and how it bolsters connections between formerly disparate entities (civilians to leaders, fans to celebrities, companies to consumers). This committee is an opportunity to navigate this change and usher in a new era of international collaboration that is efficient, impactful, and ethical.

Avani Yadav

Chair

Hello!

My name is Avani Yadav (she/her), and I am a senior at Berkeley studying Applied Math and Economics with a minor in English. I am originally from Hershey, Pennsylvania, and have been competing on the college circuit for over 3 years. This is my third consecutive year chairing the big GA, and this year's topic is my favorite so far. My academic and personal interests revolve around the internet: I am a lab manager at the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law, where I work with advocacy and journalism partners on projects at the intersection of tech and human rights; I spent my summer doing disinformation research for a think tank; I intend to eventually pursue tech law.

The digital world is my second home, which is why I know it is an almost entirely unregulated terrain. It has the power to fundamentally reshape our institutions, making this topic more vital than ever. The key to this committee is innovation – a modern problem requires modern solutions, and I am thrilled to be able to witness what you all bring to San Francisco, the beating heart of the tech world. See you all soon!

Warmly,
Avani Yadav

Aruna Sudarshan

Chair

Hello!

My name is Aruna Sudarshan, and I will be your Co-Chair for SOCHUM! I am a junior studying data science and economics. I am originally from San Diego, California and have been competing on the college circuit for 2 years. I first joined UCBMUN, simply out of curiosity, and quickly fell in love with this activity. It has not only helped me hone my diplomacy and communication skills but also allowed me to find some of my closest friends and make some of my best college memories. Outside of UCBMUN, I consult for high growth startups in the Bay Area. In my free time, I can be found playing the flute and ukulele, singing, drinking too much coffee, traveling, hiking, and setting records for the amount of hours of Netflix watched by one person.

While I thoroughly enjoy the technical aspects of my studies, I have been passionate about philosophy since my days of poring over moral theories during high school debate. As I intend to pursue a career in data science, I believe it is my responsibility to understand the ethical implications of an increasingly technological society, especially how it affects interactions between people. As such, I am incredibly excited to see the innovative ideas you all bring to address such issues – issues that only become more prevalent as individuals gain more power in the digital world.

Best,
Aruna Sudarshan
