Russian Oligarchs

Background Guide coming soon.

By March 2014, the Russian state had made major geopolitical moves spanning their entire region. In Ukraine, Russian forces annex Crimea; in Syria, Russian mercenaries intervene in the Civil War; back home, the dissident Navalny is jailed, and Putin retains strong domestic power. Behind the machinations of the Russian government, a set of extremely wealthy individuals with a portfolio spanning the globe pull the strings. These are Russia's oligarchs: from media to weapons, from sports to drugs, these nobles control massive corporations that not only influence the future of Russia, but that of the world. Given these developments, Putin has "invited" you to a meeting of oligarchs to steer the Russian state to greater power.

Ransom Miller

Chair

Delegates,

My name is Ransom Miller and I will be your Chair for the Russian Oligarchs Committee! I am a Sophomore at Cal majoring in Global Studies and minoring in Chinese, and I am the editor–in–chief of Berkeley's international relations blog The Global Citizen. I am fascinated by the power dynamics within Russia, and am super excited to see how you all handle the foreign and domestic challenges that the Russian state, economy, and society have faced over the past decade or so. When I'm not frantically reading the news, I have 10 chickens that I care for, all named after Roman Emperors. Can't wait to meet everybody next Spring!

Best,
Ransom Miller

Jet Situ

Crisis Director

Hey Delegates!

My name is Jet Situ and I'm very excited to be your Crisis Director for this committee! This crisis is extremely close to the present timeline, and many of you may remember the events taking place here. As a foreign extemporaneous speaker in high school, I covered these events extensively as they unfolded, and made some predictions – some of which didn't come to pass in reality, but may come true under your actions and goals. The background guide doesn't do nearly enough justice to the complexity of the topics we'll cover, and given the ongoing/recent nature of the conflicts covered, an arsenal of information online exists for additional research. About me: I'm a junior at Cal double majoring in Business and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. For the past two years I've been a staffer on the Ad–Hoc committee, and have been in UCBMUN since my first semester in Cal. Outside of UCBMUN, I'm part of an aerospace engineering club, and play BeatSaber on the college competitive circuit. In my free time, you'll find me at tea or ice cream places (I love sugar), hanging out with my friends, or taking walks around campus. When spring comes, I hope to see you all in commiteee, in person!

Best,
Jet Situ
