The State vs. Adnan Syed Part 2: The Retrial

Head Chair: Jessica Wang

Legal Director: Kenny Kang

Background Guide Coming in Dec. 2018

Welcome to UCBMUN XXIII! As an aspiring lawyer and a former Mock Trial captain and coach, I’m excited to see how delegates use the research, debate and diplomacy skills they’ve learned through MUN to examine a perplexing case that has captivated the country over the past few years. Born and raised in a suburb outside Cincinnati, Ohio, I spent five years abroad at the International School of Beijing before making my way to the West Coast. As a sophomore majoring in Economics with a potential minor in Data Science, I serve as the Treasurer for UCBMUN, the Director of Finance for the International Relations Council at Berkeley and an East Asia writer for the Berkeley Student Journal of Asian Studies. Outside of IR, I’m a video intern for Cal Athletics and a member of Amnesty International. On any given day, you’ll find me complaining about needing to work out, eating potato products, watching sappy 45%-on-Rotten-Tomatoes movies, and obsessing over fonts and Patrick Ness’s books. I look forward to meeting all of you! If you have questions, please reach out! You can e-mail me at

Hello delegates, my name is Kenny Kang, and I welcome you all to UCBMUN XXIII! As legal director for our legal committee regarding a retrial of the case for the murder of Hae Min Lee, I am excited and honor to help set the stage for constructive debate as the committee tries to make sense of a crime that has left many unsure even after nearly two decades. I am a junior, majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies with a concentration in national development. I was born in Los Angeles, California, and was raised there till I was nine years old before my family went to live abroad in China, Korea, and Thailand till I was accepted in Berkeley in 2016. As a result, I fostered a great love for international relations and the discovery of new cultures and values. This would play a crucial role in my interest in UCBMUN, and it has now become one of my most cherished parts of my college experience. The club has been my family and helped me grow more than I could have ever imagined. Outside of the club, I enjoy gaming, reading, bartending, binging Netflix, and going on adventures with my lovely girlfriend. I look forward to seeing all of you soon!
